Marketing Know How: Give and ye shall receive!

—X—

Do you have marketing needs? Try giving and we’ll
wager some of those needs will be met. Here are some anecdotes to prove our
theory:

xxx

Give and ye shall receive anecdote No. 1:

Architect Amie Gross of Amie Gross Architects
wanted to maintain a close relationship with the real estate community (a
great source of clients!). What’d she do? She GAVE hours of her time working
with colleagues to help found the New York City Chapter of Commercial Real
Estate Women (CREW). What did she GET? A supportive association with the
following mission statement: To encourage and promote business and
professional opportunities for women in the field of commercial real estate
in the New York metropolitan area. Visit their web site at www.nycrew.org

xxx

Give and ye shall receive anecdote No. 2:

Anthony Crusor of AQ Crusor Architects in Harlem
GAVE his all, designing a unique prototype design for a city housing project
when the project scope only called for a cursory floor plan. What did he
GET? An AIA Design Excellence Award!

xxx

Give and ye shall receive anecdote No. 3:

We GAVE free advertising to American Woman’s
Economic Development Corporation (AWED) by listing their programs and
resources right here in X-CUBE. What did we GET? We recently called up AWED
to inquire about a course they were giving called «Restructuring Your
Business Plan.» We learned that because our business was located near
Ground Zero, we are qualified to take the course for free! (We hear the
teacher is very good too!)

xxx

Convinced? Go ahead! Give a little and you may get
a lot!

xxx

Happy Giving,

Elizabeth Geary-Archer

A recent survey conducted by Ernst & Young/NACORE
reveals that real estate executives are gradually viewing the Internet
beyond a simple communications tool. The Corporate Real Estate
Benchmarking Survey
, as reported in the January 2002 Site Selection
magazine, finds that more real estate executives are finding uses for
Web-enabled software that can save them money and time. These respondents,
however, were in the minority; slightly more than one fourth reported
significant use of technology. The top four considerations in evaluating new
Web-based solutions were: 1) up-front costs, 2) return on investment, 3)
ability to customize and 4) ability to integrate with existing systems. In
light of the economic downturn, noted the survey’s authors, those CRE
companies that can best harness the efficiencies of the Internet will be
well position to compete in the upcoming years. For more information,
contact Ernst & Young </general/redirect.cgi?source=Survey&dest=http://www.ey.com>

10 Smart Email Tips

x

Sometimes, when a means of communication is cheap,
easy to access and relatively simple to use, it gets abused. It started with
the telephone and now the lack of etiquette has seeped into email. Make use
of the following 10 tips and your email will be easier to read, have a more
professional style, and will thereby be more effective in garnering
responses.

x

1. – Use the subject line. Don’t send your email
without a subject line. It doesn’t pique the recipient’s curiosity , it’s
just plain annoying. Also, don’t over use FYI, ASAP and URGENT, otherwise
you’ll always be ‘crying wolf’.

x

2. – Punctuate properly. Contrary to popular
belief, poor punctuation doesn’t indicate a higher status level, it just
makes you (and your company) look sloppy. Proper punctuation is always good
form. Spell check is free, use it.

x

3. – Get to the point. Keep your email brief and to
the point. Emails should be no longer than one screen in length. If it has
to be longer, fax or mail it. Ask for what you want by the second sentence.
If your email is longer than 2 short paragraphs, reiterate your needs in the
last sentence.

x

4. – Bullets hit home. Strategically use bullets to
recap major points, make quick, easy-to-read lists and add white-space and
order to complex ideas.

x

5. – URL’s that work. When including a URL, use
the complete URL and place it on a separate line. This ensures that the
recipient will only have to click on the link, not re-type and/or cut and
paste the URL.

x

6. – Attachers beware. Don’t send attachments
unless the recipient is expecting it and has agreed to receive the document.
Try to limit yourself to two attachments per email. Be sure that the
attachments have names relevant to their content.

x

7. – Reply right. When replying to a message, make
sure that you include the sender’s previous correspondence. In this way,
your comments are easily linked to the information requested.

x

8. – Time warp. Make sure your computer and your
email server’s time is set to the correct date and time. The best way to
test this: send an email to yourself and then note the date and time of the
email that you receive. The wrong date and time can put your email at the
wrong place in the recipient’s InBox .

x

9. – Winning sign-off. Put all your pertinent
contact information in a signature file within your email program. Save the
cute quotes and poetic babble for your personal journal.

x

10. – No email is private – EVER. If you wouldn’t
want to see it on the front page of your local newspaper, don’t send it –
save it for in-person conversations. After all, there are some sentiments
that email just can’t convey.
