And the winner is: The Business of Design and Construction, Your Next Step! The national marketing association for the design and construction industry, Society of Marketing Professional Services (SMPS), recently awarded its Striving for Excellence Award to the joint-venture trio of the SMPS New York Area Chapter, the American Institute of Architects New York Chapter, and the New York Chapter Society of Design Administration for their smash hit seminar series, The Business of Design and Construction, Your Next Step. «We are so thrilled to win the Striving for Excellence Award,» says Lisa Deneau, the ventureís key coordinator and the Marketing Director for Goshow Architects, «but we are even more excited to have reached so many young professionals and hopefully to have raised their awareness about the business aspect of our industry.» |

Sold out! Last Spring, over 100 people signed up for each seminar in the four-part program titled The Business of Design and Construction, Your Next Step. Held at the swanky Haworth showroom on Sixth Avenue, industry professionals from architectural, engineering, construction and supporting service firms packed into each of the four events, which took place once a month from February through May. The seminarís attention grabbing names stirred curiosity and even a little controversy. The four topics in the series were: Business Development ñ You have the talent, you have the projects, who needs business development?; Marketing ñ You market yourself everyday, so how are you doing?; Public Relations ñ Is public relations key to your success or is it the «dirty little secret» of the Big Names?; and Administration and Management ñ You can manage a project, can you manage a business? |

Meeting the goal. The goal for the Next Step program was to educate young A/E/C professionals in the areas of Marketing, Public Relations, Business Development and Office Administration. The mission was obviously accomplished when moderator Frank Stasiowski of PSMJ asked the audience at each seminar how many of them were under 40 and 80% of them raised their hands. Many people registered in advance for all four of the seminars, indicating that the seminars were filling a need. Evaluation forms, completed after each session, were extremely favorable. At the end of the program the audience indicated that they would like to attend the series again next year. |

Satisfied clients. «The Next Step seminars gave a great overview of the business side of architecture,» says Stephanie Murrill, a junior architect at Cooper Robertson Architects, «the program brought the description of marketing I read in the AIA handbook to life.» The Next Step program took a 14-person committee and a year of planning but in the end, it was a smashing success! If you would like to attend similar events in the future, visit the SMPS New York Chapter web site and send an email indicating your interest. |
