Marketing Know How: Advertisements and Sponsorships
«I placed and ad once,» says a Principal of a four-person
design firm, «and I didn’t even get one response from it.» I ask
him, «What did you put in the ad?» «My company logo and our
contact information.» I see. While, ads and sponsorships aren’t for
every business, they can be very effective for firms in certain stages of
their development. Here are a few tips:
1.
For sponsorships, pick events that focus on an issue related to the types
of projects you specialize in. Maximize the event by showcasing your firm as
an authority on the subject. Hand out targeted brochures that are
educational and illustrate your expertise at the same time.
2.
Only place ads in very targeted places, like a commemorative journal for
a special event attended by your client base.
3.
Make your ad speak to the occasion. Congratulate the honoree, show
appreciation for the celebrated, and focus any highlighted services to match
the event.
4.
Make your ad interactive. Invite readers to visit your web site where
they can do X and see X and sign up for a free X. Include some type of
incentive mechanism, like a discount, a coupon or a free trial.

Out and About – What’s Buzzing with A/E/C …and New Media!
The Arts & Business Council Talks about dwindling space for the arts
– On February 28th, the Arts and Business Council hosted a forum called
2001: A Space Crisis? Real Estate and the Arts. The panel, moderated by Gary
Steuer, leader of the Arts & Business Council, was made up of three
non-profit heads and a real estate broker. Ginny Louloudes of the Alliance
of Resident Theaters, Kinshasha H. Conwill of the Cultural Blueprint for NY
project, and former BAM Pres Harvey Lichtenstein talked about the lack of
space for the performing arts in Manhattan. Lichtenstein’s BAM Local
Development Corporation is piggy-backing on the economic uplift created by
the Fort Green business folk. Designers take note: the performing arts
community will be flocking to that area and architects will be needed!

Government agencies are going digital – is your firm managing projects
online yet? – From DASNY to DDC, the bureaucrats are going digital.
Government agencies are often hindered by their consultants’ not being up to
speed with technology. But when they start to require it, everyone jumps
into action by making the improvements to come up to speed. For example, I
remember when DDC began using email to send drawings, «zipped up»
via email, it prompted A/E/C consultants to make a commitment to sign up for
email accounts. Slowly a similar trend is occurring with on-line project
management and the procurement practice. We will all stand up and applaud
when the agencies replace their downloadable pdfs with word documents that
we can really use.

Diversity News:
Minority-Owned Firms Gaining Clout – Richard Hernandez of E-MBE sent
us this interesting summary from an article from the March 6, 2001 edition
of USA TODAY titled «Minority-Owned Firms Gaining Clout». The
article discusses the efforts of major corporations to sell to
minority-owned businesses, given their rapid rate of economic growth. The
article notes there are about 2.2 million self-employed African-Americans,
Hispanics and Asians, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration
and that minority firms are growing at 2.5 times the rate of non-minority
firms. Several examples of the target marketing strategy cited include
Microsoft, Dun & Bradstreet, and Coca-Cola. The article shows the
«business case» for supplier diversity is becoming more
mainstream, with economics becoming a driving force behind diversity
initiatives. To subscribe to E-MBE’s free e-news service regarding w/mbe

Workshop on Negotiation, Mediation, and Arbitration: How to Prepare,
Present, and Defend
Disputes are a fact of life in construction. How problems and
disagreements are handled and resolved (or not resolved) can have a profound
impact on an organization’s operations and bottom line. Because of
dissatisfaction with costly, time-consuming and ineffective litigation,
construction participants are increasingly turning to alternative ways of
solving their contractual dilemmas out of court. This course is designed to
provide all parties involved in construction with a thorough understanding
of how to settle disputes without litigation. It will be presented in an
informal, interactive style, using examples from real life. Participants
will be given practical, hands-on advice and guidance on how to investigate,
analyze, prepare, present, defend and resolve disputes through negotiation,
mediation, and arbitration. $735M/$895NM. 1.4 CEUs. April 9-10,
