Marketing Know How: X-CUBE’s Second Annual «Three Tips for
June»

Has it been a year already? Last year we told you to: 1. Get a CD-Rom
Business Card, 2. Schmooze!, and 3. Be generous with your clients/have a
little fun. Well, if you didn’t do these three things, we have three more!

1. Get political!

The mayoral and city council candidates are in a very open position right
now. Go hear them speak, introduce yourself. Chances are you’ve worked on a
project they were involved with or that was in a district they represented.
Political relationships are very useful.

2. Take out an ad!

Find a good spot where your clients are going to look and make your mark.
Try advertising in Oculus Magazine, the newsletter for the NYC chapter of
the American Institute of Architects. This year the Oculus committee is
switching to a glossy cover and the September issue is going to get a lot of
attention. Also new: the front and back inside covers are now available for
ads. Depending who you are and what part of the A/E/C industry you
represent, just about anyone would benefit. If you’re a niche architect
looking to join project teams, prime firms need to know about you. If you’re
contractor/CM firm with the precious skill for getting along with
architects, you should let them know. If you’re an engineer this is a no
brainer! If you’re an architectural photographer, beat out the competition
and make your skills known! And as an advertiser in Oculus, you’ll get

3. Get interactive!

Add a new interactive feature to your web site. Just one new feature.
Here’s a grab bag of ideas to pick from: quicktime movie of one of your

Frederick Bell FAIA is the New Executive Director at the AIA NY Chapter –
«Inclusiveness, a word interpreted by many to mean many things, is my
focus at the AIA,» says Bell. Stolen from the private sector to lead
the architectural division at the NYC Department of Design and Construction,
Rick Bell now faces a challenging new position that will see the move of the
Chapter to its new downtown location. It should be an interesting term. We
wish him well!

Queens, Competitions and Politics, what a combo!

Queens Plaza Competition – Even the The Van Alen Institute is getting
political: The Office of the Queens Borough President and the Van Alen are
co-sponsoring «Design Ideas Competition for Queens Plaza» in

Awards Gala last week. Honorees included: David Chartock of New York

Seaport area weathers another year – The city is once again looking for a
developer to restore and build on 14 deteriorating Seaport sites – one year
after it thought it had picked the firm best able «to get the project
across the finish line.» We wonder which financially stable developer
they will pick??? Janel Patterson, NYC Economic Development Corporation’s
spokesperson, said a new request for proposals would be released soon.

Diversity News:

Speaking of Politics – We heard the fundraiser for Al Vahn sponsored by
the Coalition of African-American Architects (COAAA) on June 7th was barely
attended. Since Mr. Vahn spoke up on the behalf of women and minority
consultants at the NYC SCA it is a pity the community did not show up to
show support in kind. Just remember folks, what goes around comes around.

The New Face of Immigration – Our friend Richard Hernandez sent us a
summary about an article titled «The New Face of Immigration» By
Naween A. Mangi (BUSINESS WEEK, June 18, 2001), which discusses the newest
wave of minority entrepreneurs, immigrants born in foreign countries in Asia
and Latin America who are starting businesses in the United States. The
article notes across the United States immigrants with entrepreneurial
leanings are starting small retail or service businesses. The new breed of
foreign-born entrepreneurs are experienced professionals who arrive with not
just skills but sometimes capital. They are also forming their own business
networks such as The Indus Entrepreneurs (TIE). These new immigrants have
created companies that push aggressively into the U.S. business mainstream.
The article also notes immigrants from Asia have had a big impact on the
face of the U.S. technology business. In 1998, these 2,775 Asian-owned
companies generated $16.8 billion in sales–17% of all sales from Silicon
Valley’s high-tech firms. And they employed more than 58,000 people, about
14% of all tech employees in the Valley.

We stumbled across this web site in the middle of a PR blitz:
www.earthpledge.org. The Earth Pledge Foundation creates media projects and
organizes special events to promote sustainable architecture and sustainable
cuisine. Working with architects, builders and designers, and farmers,
chefs, and restaurateurs, they create nonprofit media projects that promote
‘green living’.

AIM Dinner & A Deal – June 26 – The Association for Interactive
Media’s popular «Dinner & A Deal» in New York will be held at

Domain Ruling Made on «[Your Domain Here]Sucks» Case – A
dispute resolution panel ruled against financial news service Bloomberg

in the fight over the domain Michaelbloombergsucks.com. The operator of
the site has over 700 domain names containing the word «sucks»
which redirect Internet surfers to his sucks.com message board. The board
ruled that the redirecting of surfers to the message board, where people
could give opinions about various companies, products and issues, showed
that the «respondent registered the domain name with the intention to
link it to a free-speech site.» Companies that lose dispute resolution
hearings

can file suit in federal court to attempt to claim the domain name. As

Renovation and Re-use of the Battery Maritime Building – The New York
City Economic Development Corporation (EDC), on behalf of the City of New
York, is issuing a Request For Proposals (RFP) for the renovation and re-use
of the Battery Maritime Building (BMB), a City landmark located at the
southern tip of Manhattan. The Battery Maritime Building is centered among
the City’s top tourist attractions, including ferries to the Statue of
Liberty and Ellis Island, the Staten Island Ferry and the South Street
Seaport, which have a combined attendance of over six million people
annually. An additional eight million commuters pass through the adjacent
Whitehall Ferry Terminal each year. Thousands of people also work and/or
live within walking distance of the building, and thousands more can easily
access the BMB by the subway system, ferries, bus or automobile.

The area surrounding the BMB is currently the focus of major
redevelopment efforts by the City and is undergoing significant structural
transformation. A new $94 million Whitehall Ferry Terminal is under
construction adjacent to the BMB. Negotiations are underway to convert
Governors Island into a major new cultural, educational and commercial
center. The City is also in negotiations with the Guggenheim Museum to
construct a new $850 million museum designed by Frank Gehry on the
waterfront between the South Street Seaport and the BMB. The BMB itself will
soon undergo a $36 million renovation of its roof and exterior.
